Methodology

We rated the largest internet providers in the U.S. for 2025. Each provider was rated on a scale of 1 to 5 based on over a dozen factors, including speed, cost, availability, fees, customer satisfaction, connection type and more. We also used data from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to compare the average speed offered by internet companies in the U.S. to set a baseline for what is considered a good internet speed. Additionally, we analyzed data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) to understand how each internet service provider (ISP) fares in customer service and perceived value.

Top Maine cities

For instance, Xfinity offers cable internet in Portland and some surrounding towns but is largely unavailable elsewhere in the state. Satellite providers like Hughesnet and Viasat are the only companies that offer service almost anywhere in Maine.

Cheap internet options in Maine

Adding a home internet plan doesn’t have to wreck your budget. Maine internet providers offer a variety of affordable Wi-Fi plans, with even fiber prices starting as low as $25/mo. That’s a steal compared to the national average of $40–$80/mo. for home internet — and you can often save even more by bundling services

Rural internet options in Maine

Much of Maine is rural and sparsely populated. If you live outside major urban areas, you may not have access to as many options for home Wi-Fi. The good news is that satellite internet providers are available almost everywhere, even in remote rural areas of Maine. Connections may be significantly slower than cable, fiber or fixed wireless, but some satellite providers offer download speeds of at least 100 Mbps.
