Methodology
We rated the largest internet providers in the U.S. for 2024. Each provider was rated on a scale of 1 to 5 based on over a dozen factors, including speed, cost, availability, fees, customer satisfaction, connection type and more. We also used data from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to compare the average speed offered by internet companies in the U.S. to set a baseline for what is considered a good internet speed. Additionally, we analyzed data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) to understand how each internet service provider (ISP) fares in customer service and perceived value.
How to choose a provider in New Orleans, LA
When searching for internet in New Orleans, use the number of Wi-Fi devices you regularly use and your typical online activities to help select the best internet plan. Reduced-price, prepaid and no-contract internet plans are available in “the Big Easy,” so high-speed internet is within reach regardless of your budget.
When thinking about internet speed, remember that the more devices you need to connect, the faster speed you need. Get an idea of how many devices you connect in your home by adding up all the laptops, tablets, and cell phones you connect to Wi-Fi. Security systems, doorbells and even baby monitors that use Wi-Fi also count toward the total number of devices in your home. A good guideline is
- Under 5 Wi-Fi devices: 100 Mbps or less.
- 5–10 devices: 100–500 Mbps.
- Up to 20 Wi-Fi devices: up to 1 GB.
- 20 or more devices: 1 GB or higher.
When picking a plan, internet activities matter, too. Different internet technologies are better suited for certain types of online tasks.
- Fiber internet has the fastest connections and lowest latency. Get fiber if you need the best speeds for gaming and connect numerous Wi-Fi devices in your home.
- Cable internet has fast speeds up to 1 GB, which is great for streaming, browsing and more. Choose cable internet if you want affordable internet rates or bundle internet and TV.
- 5G or fixed wireless internet is generally slower than fiber or cable, making it a better choice if you have fewer overall devices. You can game, stream and more on 5G or fixed wireless internet.
- Satellite internet brings rural internet to many hard-to-reach areas. Satellite internet providers like Hughesnet, Starlink and Viasat are available in New Orleans.
