Methodology
We rated the largest internet providers in the U.S. for 2024. Each provider was rated on a scale of 1 to 5 based on over a dozen factors, including speed, cost, availability, fees, customer satisfaction, connection type and more. We also used data from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to compare the average speed offered by internet companies in the U.S. to set a baseline for what is considered a good internet speed. Additionally, we analyzed data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) to understand how each internet service provider (ISP) fares in customer service and perceived value.
How we reviewed Optimum internet
Fiber connections, gigabit speeds and customer-friendly features like no contracts and no data caps earned Optimum high marks on our ranking matrix. Gateway and installation fees, plus an inferior ACSI score for fiber services, pulled Optimum’s score down a full point. At the same time, overall availability and customer satisfaction with Optimum’s fiber-optic plans were average compared to other top ISPs, leading to an overall score of 3.8 out of 5. This score is in line with most other cable providers.
Best Optimum internet plans
Optimum home internet offers cable and fiber plans. Learn more about the pros and cons of Optimum’s best internet plans here.
Optimum 300, 500 and 1 Gig (cable)
Optimum internet plans provide reliable download speeds for most household internet needs, supporting simultaneous streaming and gaming on multiple devices. However, connecting more than 10 devices may cause buffering issues, necessitating device prioritization. Since Optimum’s cable and fiber internet plans are similarly priced, switching to fiber is advisable unless you prefer to keep cable TV. Note that upgrading to fiber means you cannot retain cable TV, and once you switch from cable to fiber, reverting back to a cable connection is not an option.
Pros
Cheapest Optimum monthly prices
Cons
Upload speeds are a fraction of the download speeds
Optimum Fiber 300, 500 and 1 Gig (fiber)
These Optimum Fiber plans are a great value, especially considering they cost the same as Optimum’s cable internet plans of the same speed. A fiber connection will provide a dedicated connection with faster upload speeds than cable internet. If you work from home, upload large files, or connect 20 devices or more in your home, an Optimum Fiber plan is best for you.
Pros
No contracts, data limits, early termination fees or equipment rental costs
Cons
Price increases after 12 months
Optimum Fiber 2, 5 and 8 Gig
Optimum Fiber plans of 2 GB and above are best for the most-connected households. Homes with dozens of connected devices can benefit from multi-gigabit speeds. These plans are best if you consistently perform online activities that need uninterrupted quality with super-fast uploading power, like competitive gaming or hosting at-home live streaming on platforms like Twitch or Instagram.
Pros
Fastest download and upload fiber speeds can virtually eliminate buffering
Cons
Monthly cost is over $100 and up
