Viasat internet, available nationwide, is a provider specializing in servicing rural or hard-to-reach locations. Viasat covers many remote areas where geographically challenging terrain prevents cable, fiber or DSL connections.
Viasat internet plans start at $99.99/mo. with 850 GB of high-speed data. The fastest Viasat speeds reach 150 Mbps, but the speed available at your home will depend on your location. Viasat service supports email, web browsing and streaming with the ability to connect multiple devices to Wi-Fi.
Best Viasat internet plans
Viasat internet keeps it simple by providing just one plan option. Viasat satellite internet is technically unlimited, but Viasat will slow down your internet service, or throttle your speed, based on network demands, or for using an excessive amount of data in a 30-day period. Viasat quantifies excessive data use as over 850 GB in a month.
Viasat prices vary between $99 and $149.99/mo. based on your location, so the best way to find out the speed and price available near you is to check your address. Viasat currently offers free professional standard installation on all plans.
Download speeds | Starting price* | High-speed data limit | Equipment fee |
---|---|---|---|
25–150 Mbps | $99.99–$149.99/mo. | 850 GB | $15/mo. |

Methodology
We rated the largest internet providers in the U.S. for 2025. Each provider was rated on a scale of 1 to 5 based on over a dozen factors, including speed, cost, availability, fees, customer satisfaction, connection type and more. We also used data from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to compare the average speed offered by internet companies in the U.S. to set a baseline for what is considered a good internet speed. Additionally, we analyzed data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) to understand how each internet service provider (ISP) fares in customer service and perceived value.
How we reviewed Viasat
Viasat received a 2.5 out of 5 in our internet comparison evaluations. However, this does not mean Viasat isn’t a quality internet service. Satellite providers will rank lower against other internet providers that offer fiber or cable internet because the technology and infrastructure are more expensive to implement and upkeep, and that cost gets passed on to consumers. Therefore, satellite internet has higher-than-average prices and installation costs compared to other types of internet services.
Overall, our Viasat review finds its no-contract plans and Wi-Fi availability in all 50 states a good value for homes that need rural internet. Viasat is more expensive than plans from competing satellite provider Hughesnet. However, unlike Hughesnet, Viasat prices don’t increase after a short promotional period, making Viasat a good choice for folks who prefer long-term price stability.
Viasat internet reviews
The Viasat Unleashed internet plan can vary by speed and price depending on where you live, but all plans share the following details:
- Viasat plans: Viasat has one home Wi-Fi plan that ranges from 25 to 150 Mbps speeds, based on your area.
- Viasat equipment: A 30” x 28” Viasat satellite dish is attached to the roof or an exterior wall. A modem and router are plugged into the interior of the home to provide Wi-Fi.
- Viasat installation: Installation is free for qualified customers, but it costs $75 for the dish to be mounted on a pole instead of on the house.
- Viasat email: Customers do not get a Viasat email address with their account, unlike other providers such as AT&T or Spectrum.
- Viasat contracts: Viasat plans are month-to-month, so you will not have a contract or early termination fee to worry about.
Pros
Available nearly anywhere.
Standard data is unlimited.
Up to 150 Mbps is available, faster than other rural internet providers.
Cons
Must put a satellite dish on your home or property.
Speed can be throttled at times.
Not suitable for real-time gaming.
Viasat Unleashed — Straightforward pricing for everyone
With approximately 850 GB of high-speed data, Viasat satellite internet is ideal for most online tasks, like email, surfing the web, browsing social media or even streaming. You can stream 340 hours of high-definition video content with this amount of data, according to AT&T’s data calculator, or up to three times that amount if you stream in standard definition.
The main drawback to Viasat internet service is its high ping rate, which is 600 milliseconds (ms) or more on average. This metric means that the latency with Viasat service is too high to adequately support real-time gaming.
Yet, Viasat can be a good solution for home internet in rural locations. Viasat is suitable for connecting multiple Wi-Fi devices like laptops, tablets, cell phones and more simultaneously.
Viasat vs. other providers
The following chart compares Viasat to other popular high-speed internet providers. Viasat’s lowest starting price of $99.99/mo. is higher than other providers. However, this rate is Viasat’s standard price, meaning your monthly bill shouldn’t increase any time soon.
For cheap internet in rural areas, try fixed wireless or 5G internet from providers like T-Mobile 5G where available.
